"My work is characterized by abstraction and a very free way of working with materials. As an autodidact I have sought my own learning path. I work on my feeling and a certain emotion, supported by technique.

Through a lot of experimentation I have developed a number of my own techniques each with its own atmosphere."

Paul Bastiaan Mullaart

Mullaart's paintings in oil and acrylic paint on canvas are reminiscent of predecessors such as Jackson Pollock and the abstract work of Karel Appel. With various tools and materials, action paint-like techniques are alternated with subtlety and extreme control. By building up his paintings layer by layer, a new space is created in the 2-dimensional plane. That's what Mullaart is looking for; a new space created by him. In addition to Mullaart's paintings, photography broadens his oeuvre. In the past he worked as a journalistic photographer. Now he uses the camera in his search for colors and structures and is involved in portrait and studio photography.
